Trial production is a crucial step before moving into mass production, involving rigorous testing of production line equipment, process integration, worker proficiency, and product consistency. Any issues identified during prototype testing prompt adjustments to the production lines. Once these adjustments are completed and the production lines meet the required standards, mass production can commence.

Xiaomi is the fourth company to receive such approval since late 2017, signaling China’s increasing scrutiny of eligibility criteria for vehicle production.

While the NDRC approval brings Xiaomi closer to mass-producing its EVs, it still needs approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). MIIT evaluates the technical and safety requirements of new automakers and their models. According to sources cited in Jiemian’s report, Xiaomi could potentially receive MIIT approval within two months, or at the latest, by the end of the year.

Xiaomi’s automotive division is actively preparing for mass production. Its automotive plant in Yizhuang, Pekin, is currently hiring approximately 100 shop floor workers with salaries ranging from RMB 6,000 ($820) RMB uchun 7,000 for an eight-hour workday. This hiring phase is considered an initial stage of preparation, with expectations of larger-scale hiring by the end of the year or early next year, according to a supplier source.

In the second quarter, Xiaomi invested RMB 1.4 billion in its innovation business, which includes smart EVs, as indicated in the company’s financial report released on August 29. Xiaomi’s president, Lu Veybing, stated that the company’s first EV has successfully completed summer testing and is progressing well. Xiaomi’s goal to begin mass production of its inaugural EV model in the first half of 2024 remains unchanged.
