In an exciting update, a top BYD executive recently unveiled a video previewing the much-awaited hybrid SUV, the Song L DM-i, suggesting its imminent market debut. The hybrid system, identical to that found in the Qin L DM-i hybrid sedan, promises improved fuel efficiency and extended driving range, aligning with BYD’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.

Lu Tian, the head of BYD’s Dynasty series sales department, shared exclusive footage of the Song L DM-i on Weibo, providing a closer look at the model’s design. Despite sharing the ‘Song L’ moniker with its all-electric counterpart, the SUV boasts a distinct aesthetic, setting it apart in the lineup.

The Song L BEV was launched in December 2023, marking its position as the second shooting brake-style SUV under BYD’s umbrella, following the Denza N7. Further expanding its portfolio, BYD introduced the Sea Lion 07 EV in May, the inaugural model under the e-Platform 3.0 Evo platform, continuing the brand’s innovation in the electric vehicle segment.

Described by Lu Tian as leading the charge in the mid-size SUV segment, the Song L DM-i is anticipated to feature the advanced DM 5.0 hybrid system, similar to the Qin L DM-i. This system ensures reduced fuel consumption and an extended combined range, reflecting BYD’s dedication to eco-friendly advancements.

On May 28th, BYD debuted its fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) technology, known as DM 5.0, offering significant improvements over its predecessor. The Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i were the first models to incorporate this groundbreaking technology, boasting a combined range exceeding 2,000 kilometers on a single tank of fuel and fully charged battery.

According to previous filings, the Song L DM-i measures 4,780 mm in length, 1,898 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height, with a wheelbase spanning 2,782 mm. Comparatively, the Song L EV features dimensions of 4,840 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,560 mm in height, along with a 2,930 mm wheelbase.

Powered by a 1.5 L engine with a 74 kW displacement, the Song L DM-i offers consumers a choice between two battery capacities: 18.316 kWh and 26.593 kWh, catering to diverse driving needs.

BYD reported a historic sales milestone in June, selling a staggering 341,658 new energy vehicles (NEVs), marking a 35.02% increase year-over-year and a 2.97% rise from May. This total comprises 340,211 passenger NEVs and 1,447 commercial NEVs, showcasing the company’s robust growth in the NEV sector.
