Financially distressed Chinese รถยนต์ไฟฟ้า (อีวี) startup, WM Motor, has initiated bankruptcy proceedings as part of its strategy to revitalize the company through debt restructuring.

The bankruptcy filing took place in Shanghai and was publicly disclosed on October 9 by China’s national enterprise bankruptcy information platform. The document indicates that WM Motor Technology Group Co. is the applicant, providing minimal additional details.

Following widespread discussion surrounding the case, WM Motor issued a statement on Weibo, outlining the reasons behind its decision. Despite experiencing significant growth since its establishment in late 2015, WM Motor has faced various challenges in recent years, including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, unfavorable conditions in the capital market, fluctuating raw material prices, and difficulties in securing capital.

In collaboration with creditors, shareholders, and potential investors, WM Motor aims to identify the most effective solutions. Throughout this process, the company will continue to provide customer service to its existing vehicle owners.

The statement concluded, “We will closely monitor market dynamics and industry trends while continually enhancing our products and services, with the goal of reemerging stronger after the pre-restructuring phase.”

WM Motor was founded in a similar timeframe to other prominent Chinese EV manufacturers, including Nio, เซิง, and Li Auto, and had successfully delivered various models, such as the E5, EX5, EX6, and W6.
