Tesla Enhances Referral Incentives for Model 3 and Model Y in China to Drive Sales

Tesla Boosts Referral Incentives to Drive Sales of China-Made Model 3 and Model Y
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has ramped up its referral incentives in China to bolster sales of the locally produced Model 3 and Model Y.
Effective from July 7, Tesla owners who refer others to purchase the Model 3 and Model Y will enjoy an upgraded benefits package, as announced by the US electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer on Weibo.
The enhanced package includes a cash bonus of RMB 3,500 ($410) for the buyer, which can be deducted from the purchase price, along with a complimentary 90-day trial of Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) assisted driving software.
Referrals will be rewarded with 7,000 points that can be redeemed for various gifts, including a TeslaMic, a miniature Model Y, or supercharging miles.
Previously, Tesla had an owner referral program in China for several years, offering both the referrer and the purchaser 1,500 kilometers of free supercharging. The program was discontinued on September 18, 2021, but reinstated on October 24, 2022, with the introduction of bonus points.
The recent upgrade to the referral bonus for the Model 3 and Model Y follows Tesla’s announcement on July 1 of substantial discounts ranging from RMB 35,000 to RMB 45,000 on the entire lineup of Model S and Model X in China.
It’s worth noting that the Model S and Model X are not manufactured in China and were introduced to the market in late March.
In an effort to encourage recommendations, Tesla is also providing extra incentives for customers who purchase the Model S and Model X based on referrals. Such buyers will receive an additional RMB 7,000 bonus, free supercharging benefits for three or six years, and 90 days of free EAP benefits. The referrer, in turn, will earn a 48,000-point bonus that can be redeemed for supercharger miles.
According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released on July 4, Tesla sold an impressive 93,680 China-made vehicles in June, including exports. This figure represents the second-highest number of sales recorded, following November 2022’s record-breaking 100,291 units. It signifies an increase of 18.72 percent compared to the 78,906 units sold in June of the previous year and a growth of 20.57 percent from the 77,695 units sold in May.
More detailed information regarding Tesla’s June sales in China and the breakdown of exported China-made vehicles is expected to be disclosed in the coming days.
