Regulatory Filing Unveils Vital Specifications for BYD Fang Cheng Bao’s Inaugural Model, Bao 5
Fang Cheng Bao started accepting reservations for the Bao 5 late last month, with a price range of RMB 300,000-RMB 400,000.
BYD‘s personalized sub-brand Fang Cheng Bao began taking pre-orders for its first production car, the Bao 5 (literally Leopard 5), at the end of last month, though key specs information was not released. Now, a regulatory filing has revealed that information.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released its latest catalog of models that will soon be allowed to be sold for public comment yesterday, and the Bao 5 is included.
The public can submit feedback between September 13 and September 19. Entering the catalog is the last major regulatory process by which a model can be allowed to be sold in China.
There is only one version of the Bao 5 in the catalog, with length, width and height of 4,890 mm, 4,930 mm and 1,970 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 1,920 mm.
It weighs 2,890 kg and supports a top speed of 180 kilometers per hour.
The hybrid model is powered by a 1,497-ml engine with a peak power of 143 kW, and dual electric motors with a peak power of 200 kW at the front and 285 kW at the rear.
The Bao 5 is powered by BYD’s blade batteries based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry, with information on the pack’s capacity currently unknown.
It also has a number of personalized options, including power pedals, tail cameras, and a tow hook, according to the filing.
BYD introduced the Fang Cheng Bao brand on August 16, unveiling a technology platform called DMO and giving the Bao 5 its official debut.
BYD’s hybrid technology platform previously included the DM-i and DM-p, with the former focusing on fuel economy and the latter more on performance. The company’s pure electric vehicle platform is called e-Platform 3.0.
DMO is Fang Cheng Bao’s proprietary platform, where O stands for off-road and DM stands for dual mode.
BYD also debuted the Super 8, a concept of the Bao 8, and another model, the Bao 3, at the August 16 event.
On August 25, Fang Cheng Bao made the Bao 5 available for pre-order on the first day of the Chengdu auto show, with a price range of RMB 300,000 ($41,170) – RMB 400,000 yuan.
As of now, the Bao 5’s official launch date has not been set.
