Abu Dhabi: The UAE has granted the first-ever license for self-driving cars to operate on its roads, following approval at a Cabinet meeting chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai on Monday (July 3, 2023).
The license has been awarded to WeRide, a company that will conduct tests using various types of autonomous vehicles. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first license of its kind in the country.
In addition to this development, the Cabinet also approved a national policy for electric vehicles. The policy includes the establishment of an electric vehicle charging network, regulation of the EV market, and support for related industries to reduce emissions and energy consumption.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the importance of adapting to evolving mobility patterns and ensuring the well-being and quality of life of citizens and residents. He stated that the government’s agenda will prioritize these aspects as the country anticipates significant changes in the way people live and move within its borders.
During the same meeting, Sheikh Mohammed also approved an updated national energy strategy to address rapid changes in the energy sector. The strategy aims to triple the contribution of renewable energy within the next seven years.
WeRide, headquartered in Guangzhou, China, with offices in Abu Dhabi and other cities, specializes in Level 4 autonomous driving technologies. Level 4 represents fully autonomous driving capabilities, although human intervention is still possible upon request. WeRide offers a range of products, including Robotaxis, Robobuses, Robovans, Robosweepers, and Advanced Driving Solutions, catering to-demand transportation, online ride-hailing, urban logistics, and environmental services.
Furthermore, Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Center (ITC) announced that visitors to Saadiyat and Yas Island can enjoy a free self-driving vehicle service during the Eid holiday period. The service, named “Txai was initially launched as a trial on Yas Island in November 2021 and ensures a safe and secure journey for passengers.
