The IM L6 Light Year Edition, a groundbreaking electric vehicle from IM Motors, has recently caught attention following its range announcement by the Chinese MIIT. Equipped with a state-of-the-art 123.7 kWh semi-solid-state battery, the vehicle boasts an impressive cruising range of 1,002 km under CLTC conditions. The semi-solid-state battery in the IM L6 was co-developed by SAIC and Suzhou Qingtao New Energy Technology (Qingtao Energy). SAIC, a major stakeholder, has invested around 2.98 billion yuan ($410.21 million USD) in Qingtao Energy, holding a 15.29% share. This collaboration highlights SAIC’s commitment to advancing EV battery technologies.
Performance and Charging Efficiency
The IM L6 Light Year Edition features a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive system, delivering a maximum power output of 190/350 kW (255/469 hp). Its quasi-900V ultra-fast charging capability allows a 12-minute charge to extend the range by 400 km, setting a new standard for charging efficiency. For comparison, the standard dual-motor version offers a slightly higher output of 200/379 kW (268/508 hp).
Dimensions and Design
Measuring 4,931 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, and 1,474 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm, the IM L6 Light Year Edition is both spacious and sleek. The vehicle’s curb weight is 2,330 kg. The coupe-style design, fastback roofline, hidden door handles, petal-shaped rims, and ducktail spoiler exude a sporty and youthful appeal. The Light Year Edition is distinguishable by its unique rear “Light Year” logo while retaining the overall design of the standard trim.

Inside, the IM L6 features a futuristic cockpit with a 26.3-inch liftable screen, a 10.5-inch functional center console display, and a half-moon steering wheel. The series is equipped with cutting-edge chips, including the Nvidia OrinX, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295, and NXP S32G, enabling advanced features like Navigation On Autopilot (NOA) for urban environments without relying on maps.
