On December 3, the highly anticipated GWM Tank 500 Hi4-Z began pre-sales, starting at 379,800 yuan (approximately $52,150 USD). This innovative off-road PHEV is not just an upgraded version of the Tank 500 Hi4-T with a bigger battery—it has been purpose-built to excel in challenging terrains.
A Redefined Off-Road System
Unlike traditional PHEV systems, the Hi4-Z offers substantial improvements over the previous Hi4-T system. The Hi4-T relied on a P-2 architecture with a torque converter and automatic transmission, which constrained trunk space and battery capacity due to the need for a drive shaft.
The Hi4-Z takes a leap forward with its revolutionary design. It incorporates a three-speed power split on the front axle, a two-speed reducer on the rear axle, and a large 59.05 kWh battery placed at the center of the chassis. This system addresses common off-road challenges, such as motor stalling or wheel idling, by employing advanced power shunting technology and multiple gears to optimize torque distribution.
Additionally, the vehicle retains a mechanical reverse gear for better control in tricky situations. A DeDion bridge design, similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz electric G-Wagon, ensures greater suspension travel, improved ground clearance, and superior motor protection.
Exceptional Performance and Range
The Hi4-Z features an 800V high-voltage platform, enabling fast charging of up to 163 kW. It achieves a 30-80% charge in just 15 minutes, providing an additional 120 km of range. The 59.05 kWh NCM battery boasts an energy density of 234 Wh/kg, delivering a pure electric range of 201 km (WLTC) and a combined range of 1,096 km (WLTC). Fuel consumption is a modest 8.6 L/100 km.
Power comes from the new Miller-cycle E20NB 2.0T engine, offering a peak power of 185 kW and 380 Nm of torque. Complementing this is a powerful dual-motor setup: the front motor provides 215 kW and 400 Nm, while the rear motor delivers 240 kW and 415 Nm. Together, the system outputs an impressive 645 kW and 1,195 Nm, propelling the Hi4-Z from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

The Tank 500 Hi4-Z is expected to launch soon, following its MIIT listing in April. Priced higher than the Hi4-T (345,000 yuan, or $47,350 USD), its final cost should align with the 379,800 yuan ($52,150 USD) pre-sale price.
