Tesla’s journey to 5 million vehicles produced has been remarkable:

  • It took Tesla 12 years to reach its first million vehicles produced.
  • Only 18 months later, the company hit its second million.
  • Tesla then accelerated its production pace, taking just 11 months to go from its 2 millionth to 3 millionth car, followed by seven months from 3 million to 4 million.
  • Finalement, it took just six months to produce the 5 millionth vehicle.

Tesla’s Shanghai factory, operational since the end of 2019, played a significant role in this achievement. The factory, the first wholly foreign-owned automotive manufacturing project in China, started delivering Model 3 sedans in January 2020 and Model Y crossovers in January 2021 to local consumers.

The new Model 3 in China offers a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive entry version and replaces the previously available two-motor Performance version with a dual-motor Long Range version. Pre-sale prices for the entry-level Model 3 in China start at RMB 259,900 ($35,730), which is a 12% increase compared to the starting price of the older model.
