Deepal S09: Changan’s New Flagship EREV SUV Revealed

Changan’s rapidly expanding Deepal brand is set to introduce its latest flagship SUV, the Deepal S09, which debuts as an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). Recently, details about this highly anticipated model were revealed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), shedding light on its specifications and features.

Dimensions and Design

The Deepal S09 boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 5205 mm in length, 1996 mm in width, and 1800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3105 mm. Classified as a three-row SUV, it comfortably seats six passengers. Buyers can opt for 20- or 21-inch wheels, and the SUV’s approach and departure angles are 19 and 21 degrees, respectively, for both single- and dual-motor versions.

Visually, the S09 sports a sleek, modern design. Its front features a through-light design and lower-set headlights, with an enclosed front grille and an air inlet below. A Lidar unit prominently positioned at the top of the windshield signals advanced driver-assistance systems, likely powered by Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 system. The side profile showcases hidden door handles, exuding a clean and minimalist aesthetic reminiscent of Li Auto models. At the rear, a through tail light interrupted only by the Deepal logo completes the futuristic look.

Performance and Powertrain

The Deepal S09 is built on Deepal’s Super Range Extension 2.0 technology, centered around the JL469ZQ1 Blue Whale HE1.5T hybrid engine, which delivers a maximum power of 110 kW. Two drivetrain configurations are available:

• Single-motor version: Equipped with a 231 kW ATDM02 electric motor on the rear axle.
• Dual-motor version: Adds a 131 kW AYDM01 electric motor to the front axle, providing all-wheel drive.

Both versions share a top speed of 205 km/h and are powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by CATL. While specific battery capacities remain undisclosed, differing curb weights suggest the availability of multiple battery sizes.

Weight Specifications

The S09’s curb weight varies depending on the drivetrain:

• Single-motor: 2510–2590 kg
• Dual-motor: 2668–2690 kg

Advanced Technology

Beyond its elegant design and robust performance, the Deepal S09 features cutting-edge technology. The SUV integrates Lidar, but it is yet to be confirmed whether the unit is sourced from Huawei or the Hesai ATX system, as per Changan’s recent partnership.

Expected Launch and Pricing

The Deepal S09 is anticipated to hit the market in the first half of 2025, with prices starting around 300,000 yuan (approximately $41,300 USD).
