BYD’s New DM Hybrid Technology Achieves 2.9L/100km Fuel Efficiency and 2,100 km Range
BYD has unveiled its fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) hybrid technology, featuring an impressive fuel consumption rate of just 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers at low charge and a combined range of up to 2,100 kilometers. This next-generation technology, known as DM 5.0, was introduced at an event in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, consolidating BYD’s leadership in the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector.
BYD, which entered the automotive industry in 2003 through the acquisition of Qinchuan, began its plug-in hybrid technology research and development in 2004. The first-generation DM hybrid platform launched in 2008 with the BYD F3DM, the world’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle.
In 2021, BYD introduced the fourth-generation DM platform, offering both the performance-focused DM-p and the energy-efficient DM-i versions. The technology played a significant role in helping BYD reach its 2023 sales target of 3 million units with its Glory edition models.
The new fifth-generation DM technology, announced by BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu, boasts a world-leading engine thermal efficiency of 46.06 percent. Vehicles equipped with this technology offer fuel consumption as low as 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers at low charge and a combined range of up to 2,100 kilometers, tripling the range of conventional fuel vehicles.
The BYD Qin L DM-i and BYD Seal 06 DM-i are the first models to feature BYD’s fifth-generation DM technology and were also launched at today’s event.
