BYD Unveils Compact EV Dolphin in Malaysia: New Energy Vehicle Giant’s Latest Launch
BYD has officially introduced its compact electric vehicle (EV) Dolphin to the Malaysian market, marking its second model in the country following the Atto 3. Collaborating with Malaysian distributor Sime Darby Motors, the Dolphin was unveiled at a special event on July 27, as announced in BYD’s press release.
The BYD Dolphin is available in two versions in Malaysia, priced at 99,900 ringgit ($22,138) and 124,900 ringgit, respectively. In comparison, China offers three versions, starting at RMB 116,800 ($16,270), RMB 123,800, and RMB 136,800.
Measuring 4,125 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm, the BYD Dolphin entered the Chinese market on August 29, 2021.
The Atto 3’s successful launch in December last year marked BYD’s formal entry into the Malaysian passenger car market, where the company has established eight operational stores. According to Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD Asia-Pacific auto sales division, BYD aims to enhance accessibility to its products and services nationwide, in partnership with local entities.
The Atto 3 has rapidly gained popularity in the Malaysian EV market, positioning BYD as the leading brand for EV sales in the country.
While BYD entered the Malaysian market in 2014, its initial focus was on commercial vehicles and local assembly of electric buses. The collaboration with Sime Darby Motors, beginning in October 2022, allowed BYD to import its passenger cars, leading to the launch of the BYD Atto 3 in December of the same year.
