BYD Showcases Six Models at the Munich Auto Show, Launches Seal Model in Europe

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD showcased six of its models at the IAA Munich auto show and officially introduced the BYD Seal from the Ocean range to the European market. The six models presented at the event include the Seal, Song Plus EV, Atto 3 (known as Yuan Plus in China), Dolphin, Han, and Denza D9.

The BYD Seal, one of the highlights, is offered in two versions in Europe, with starting prices of 44,900 euros ($48,210) and 50,990 euros. Originally launched in China on July 29, 2022, the Seal was positioned as a strong rival to the Tesla Model 3. In China, it is available in five versions, with a starting price range of RMB 189,800 ($26,000) to RMB 279,800.

BYD recently rebranded the Chaser 07 as the Seal DM-i, which is a hybrid variant of the Seal. The Seal DM-i went on pre-sale at the Chengdu auto show in China last month.

Another model that made its European debut at the Munich auto show is the Song Plus EV, which will be available for sale in Europe shortly.

BYD’s passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) have been making inroads into the European market, with a presence in 15 European countries in less than a year. The company has opened over 140 stores in countries like the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain through local partners. According to Michael Shu, general manager of BYD’s European car sales division, BYD’s passenger NEVs are now available in 54 countries and territories worldwide.

BYD’s entry into the European passenger EV market began with the introduction of three BEVs—the Atto 3, Han, and Tang—on September 28, 2022.

The company has also expressed interest in establishing a manufacturing plant in Europe, with countries like France, Spain, and Germany under consideration. Discussions on this matter continue, according to reports.
