BYD Fang Cheng Bao Cuts Bao 5 Price by Up to 17% to Revive Sales
BYD‘s personalized sub-brand, Fang Cheng Bao, has significantly reduced the price of its only currently available model, the Bao 5 off-road SUV, in an attempt to boost sales. Monthly deliveries of the Bao 5 have fallen below 3,000 units for the past three months.
Today, Fang Cheng Bao announced a new pricing structure for the Bao 5, reducing the prices of all four variants by RMB 50,000 yuan ($6,890).
BYD officially launched the Fang Cheng Bao brand on August 16, 2023, and the Bao 5 off-road SUV was introduced on November 9, 2023, with deliveries commencing at the end of that month.
Currently, Fang Cheng Bao offers only the Bao 5 for sale. The brand unveiled the Bao 8 at its spring launch event on April 16, along with two concept cars, the Super 3 SUV and the Super 9 supercar. However, the launch dates for these models have not yet been announced.
The Bao 5 is built on BYD’s DMO hybrid platform, designed specifically for off-road capabilities. The vehicle measures 4,890 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.
All five variants of the Bao 5 share the same four-wheel drive system and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The main difference between the variants lies in the body control system, with the two higher-end models featuring the DiSus intelligent body control system, while the lower-end models do not.
BYD unveiled the DiSus system on April 10, 2023, touting it as the first in-house developed intelligent body control system by a Chinese automaker.
Monthly deliveries of the Bao 5 surpassed 5,000 units in December 2023 and January 2024 but have since declined, with deliveries falling below 3,000 units for the past three months. As of the end of June, Fang Cheng Bao had cumulatively delivered 23,995 vehicles, according to data compiled by AUTO IN CHINA.
Regarding the pace of product launches, Fang Cheng Bao’s general manager, Xiong Tianbo, recently told local media that the brand has been slightly slower than planned. However, he noted that as the brand’s distribution channels improve, Fang Cheng Bao aims to launch new products every quarter starting in the fourth quarter of 2024.
