BYD Announces Construction of Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Plant in Cambodia, Aiming for Annual Production Capacity of 20,000 Units
BYD Expands Global Footprint with New EV Assembly Facility in Cambodia and Ongoing Investment in Southeast Asia
In a strategic move to bolster its presence in Southeast Asia, BYD, the renowned electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has announced plans to construct a dedicated assembly plant in Cambodia. The facility, expected to have an annual production capacity of 20,000 vehicles, will cater to the domestic market while also serving international demand, according to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Prime Minister Hun Manet took to social media platform X to share details of his meeting with Liu Xueliang, the General Manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific auto sales division. The post included several images, providing a visual update on the partnership between Cambodia and the Chinese automaker.
BYD’s entry into Cambodia dates back to 2020, marked by the establishment of its first passenger car sales center in the capital, Phnom Penh. Since then, the company has introduced multiple new energy vehicle (NEV) models to the Cambodian market. Notably, in August 2022, BYD launched the Atto 3(BYD Yuan Plus), known as the Yuan Plus in China, further solidifying its commitment to the region.
Southeast Asia is a key focus area for BYD, with the company already operating a manufacturing facility in Thailand. On July 4, BYD celebrated the inauguration of its Thai plant, a milestone event where the company’s 8 millionth NEV rolled off the production line. This plant, boasting an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, stands as BYD’s first wholly-owned overseas passenger car manufacturing site and its first in Southeast Asia.
Indonesia is another Southeast Asian country where BYD intends to deepen its investment. The company is planning to build a new plant with an annual production capacity matching that of its Thai facility—150,000 vehicles. As reported by Indonesia’s Chief Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto in January, BYD is set to inject $1.3 billion into the Indonesian project.
Luhut Panjaitan, Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, confirmed in a March 19th Instagram post that BYD intended to commence construction of the Indonesian factory in July. According to Panjaitan, BYD expressed strong interest in the Indonesian market, with ambitions to initiate commercial production at the new manufacturing site by early 2026.
These developments underscore BYD’s aggressive expansion strategy in Southeast Asia, reinforcing the company’s position as a leading player in the region’s growing EV sector. By establishing robust manufacturing capabilities across key markets, BYD is well-positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.
